Community Projects

A community art project by Kate Geck called Machine Imaginings, which uses generative A.I machine learning models to create images of vulnerable Australian flora at the Braybrook Community Centre in 2023. A series of tapestries was produced by the community.

Machine Imaginings 2023

Over 6 months in 2023, I worked with the Braybrook Community Centre to explore machine learning models and how they can help us become attentive to the world around us. First, we created 100s of observational drawings of vulnerable local flora. This 'community database' was used to train machine learning models, which generated 1000s of 'impossible evolutions' of these plants. We then created elaborate physical collages from the database of evolutions, before finally transposing these into 24 woven tapestries that were exhibited in the community centre gallery.

Exhibited at Braybrook Community Hub 2023 Narrm Australia. Supported by the City of Maribyrnong Arts + Culture program.

Fog Theatre Collaborations 2018-23

I have had the pleasure and joy of working with artists at Fog Theatre on a range of projects such as guided meditations and an interactive tool for performance.

Artful Dodgers Studios 2010-2018

Artful Dodgers is an arts space for young artists aged between 15 and 27, and is one of Australia's flagship arts programs for young people who may be surviving under difficult circumstances. For 9 years I was a community cultural development artist, running lots of projects introducing artists to technologies who may not ordinarily have the opportunity to access them. I managed the media arts space, worked the studio, wrote grants and designed and presented a wide range of projects that received support from councils, governments and philanthropics. It was an amazing time and I worked with the best people 🥰

Projects supported by Australia Council, Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne, City of Yarra, Gandel, Lord Mayor's Charitable Trust, Besen.

SIGNAL Arts 2010-2019

SIGNAL is an arts space for young artists aged between 12 and 25. I was invited to work on a range of projects at SIGNAL beginning with 2 X Urban Mesh workhouses in 2010 + 2011. I then received funding to run 6 projects with young artists exploring textiles and technologies between 2012-2018, including the Pika Pika Panic projects collaborating with young artists in Melbourne and Osaka in 2012 + 2013. I then ran the SIGNAL Curators program in 2018-19, organising events and managing an exhibiton at Dirty Dozen.

SIGNAL is part of the City of Melbourne.
